Inlays & Onlays

When more than half of the tooth’s biting surface is damaged a possible alternative to a crown or large filling is an inlay or onlay.

Inlays and onlays can be made from several materials such as porcelain, gold, or composite resin. Certain factors such as your biting force and location of the treatment area can aid in determining the appropriate material to be used. An inlay, similar to a filling, is used inside the cusp tips of the tooth. An onlay is a more substantial reconstruction, similar to the inlay but extending out over one or more of the cusps of the tooth.

Inlays and Onlays offer a good alternative in cases where tooth damage is not extensive to require an entire crown. They also offer more strength to a tooth than a traditional filling which can reduce structural strength of the natural tooth by up to 50 percent.
