Your Child’s First Visit

The first dental cleaning should happen just after your child’s third birthday. Your child’s first visit to the dentist is an important milestone that can affect his or her oral health long term, so we strive to make your child’s first visit a pleasant experience. We may have you sit on the chair holding your child or we may have you wait in the waiting room for a portion of the visit to help build a relationship between your child and the dental professional.

We will:
  • Examine your child’s teeth and gums
  • Examine for signs of adverse habits
  • Determine your need for Fluoride
  • Review oral hygiene tips with you and your child

We may take x-rays to use as an aid in decay detection and to also check the development of your child’s teeth.

Tips for the first visit
  • Read a book with your child about the dentist
  • Speak about positive experiences you had at the dentist
  • Review what will happen at the dentist
  • Have your child “preview” the office (i.e. sitting in during a dental cleaning of a sibling or other family member.)
